Tell us about Me & Orla
Me & Orla is my portfolio business under which I write, photograph, blog and mentor creatives. I have ecourses for Instagrammers and influencers, a weekly podcast and work on creative collaborations with major brands for social media.
How did you get started with Me & Orla?
Me & Orla started as an Instagram account, purely for fun while I worked in Speech Therapy for kids with special needs! I grew a following really quickly, so I started my blog, and then it gradually evolved into my dream business, and I was able to quit my day job. What began as a personal website has had to evolve to take heavy traffic and house a variety of functions, and I've had to learn to do the same!
What’s one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I find it an eternal struggle juggling parenting with entrepreneurship. The two are like oil and water, and so there's really no way to successfully mix them together. I always feel like I'm failing at one or the other, and I don't think people talk about it enough!
What would you say has been one of your biggest “wins”?
Last year I launched my signature ecourse for Instagram after much groundwork and procrastination. Within hours I'd made my annual healthcare salary, and sold out twice over! It was the first time I realised I'd been playing small out of fear, and things really changed for me from there.
Did you have any help building your website or did you do it yourself?
It's always been self-built, partly by necessity and partly just because I'm a control freak! Having struggled with various glitchy WP themes over the last few decades I'm now loyally devoted to Station Seven - this is my third theme from you guys! I wholeheartedly mean it when I say the quality and design is second to none - and it saves me so much time and frustration! Recently I enlisted Wordpress whizz Kim Lawler to help me streamline and customize a few things, and I'm feeling really happy with my site!
Any advice for others looking to start out?
When you're starting out the one resource you have at your disposal is YOU. I did everything myself and worked crazy hours, because I could, and it meant I was investing in my business. Now I'm in a position where I can delegate more, but having done it myself I know exactly how things need to work and can be so much more specific and strategic because of it.
