There’s no use having a beautifully designed website if nobody can find it on search engines. Thankfully Squarespace already optimizes all their websites by default, however, did you know there are extra things that can help your website become even more visible on search engines? You don’t even need to be a search engine optimization (SEO) expert!

What is SEO?

SEO is the process to optimize the visibility of your website on search engines and it’s a process since there are multiple elements that can be optimized to increase your chances of being visible on search engines when people search keywords that match with your website content.

Search engines typically prioritize the following:

  • SEO titles

  • Page titles

  • Navigation titles

  • Blog post titles

  • Headings

These are areas that you should keep in mind when it comes to including keywords that your targeted audience would search for on search engines.

Here are quick and easy tips you can use now to optimize your website!

Add keywords to important areas of your website

The top three areas to make sure you have crucial keywords are your SEO title, navigation title, and page title. The SEO title is indexed by search engines, so you want the keywords of what your targeted audience would search for to be in the SEO title. Navigation titles are the links and in your navigation menu for pages like your About page and Contact page. Page titles are longer titles for the different pages on your website and allow you to further explain what that page could be about.

Add keywords to photo titles

Search engines can’t read photos and understand what the content of that photo is, so that means that they can’t make it easily visible unless you name it with keywords! Instead of “Picture1.jpg”, you can name it “Australian_Mockingbird” if it’s a photo of an Australian Mockingbird. Not to mention adding in a description and alt text boost your SEO even more! Alt-text is the text you see when you hover your mouse over the image.

Blogging

If you don’t have a blog on your website, then you should start one! Your audience loves to learn from you and value what you have to say, not to mention search engines are all about collecting those keywords from your content. The more content you have on your website, the more keywords search engines are able to index and make your website more visible.

Make sure that you have crucial keywords, not in just your body content, but your headings too. Search engines do prioritize headings to understand the main themes of your website. Keep your headings clear and descriptive.

SSL is enabled

Search engines want to make sure they are prioritizing safe and secure links, so it’s important to make sure your pages are on a secure connection. You want to check the SSL panel to make sure it’s set in our Secure setting.

Internal links

Links are just as important as keywords when it comes to SEO. Search engines love links that direct to your content, whether that is external links or internal links. You can externally link your website URL on highly trafficked areas on the web and internally link your content on your website. For example, if you're writing a blog post and there is relevant information that the reader may be interested in learning more about, then you can link a past blog post that you wrote.

There are many other processes to optimize your website out there but these are the top ones. Take on these tips and your website will be visible on any search engine in no time! Is there a tip that you find the most useful? Let us know in the comments!
