In early 2020, Squarespace launched their latest version of their hosted website platform, curiously called Squarespace 7.1

Despite being only a ".1" upgrade, it functions almost like an entirely new platform. Some features are removed, some are added, and some things are just done a bit differently. And it's simply not possible to migrate a Squarespace 7.0 site to 7.1.

For the full lowdown on Squarespace 7.0 vs. Squarespace 7.1, check out our in-depth breakdown here.

We're actually big fans of the new platform, as it streamlines the design process in a number of ways.

However, if you're still wanting to build a new site on Squarespace 7.0, you might wonder if you're simply out of luck.

Why would you want to use 7.0?

There are a number of reasons you might still want to create a site using Squarespace 7.0. Maybe you've become accustomed to how that platform works, and aren't quite ready to invest in leveling up your skills quite yet. Or perhaps you've purchased a Squarespace kit that works with 7.0 only. Or maybe there are some features, like parallax scrolling, cover pages, multiple nav locations, sidebars (on some templates), or... you get the idea.

Well, you're in luck! Although it's not possible to create a Squarespace 7.0 site when navigating through Squarespace's website, it actually IS still possible.

All you need is the direct link to the Squarespace 7.0 template selection page, and voila! You can now choose from Brine, Rally, Pacific, and all your favorite 7.0 templates. Simply pick your template to get started as usual.

Is it safe to start a Squarespace 7.0 site?

Squarespace has stated that they plan on supporting and maintaining the 7.0 platform indefinitely. Although they won't be adding new features, they will continue to support the platform and keep it stable for years to come.

What does "indefinitely" mean? Well, Squarespace 5 which was launched waaaaaay back in 2008 is still technically supported so, you know, you've got plenty of time.

OK, but should I just be starting with 7.1?

That's up to you really. We love the new version, for all the reasons we outline here. But your circumstances might make it worthwhile to stay with 7.0 We can't make the decision for you, but we outlined our thoughts on whether you should switch to Squarespace 7.1 or not here.

Rather just start with Squarespace 7.1?

No worries, just get started directly from Squarespace!

Need some help with a design? Absolutely! We have a full selection of Squarespace templates for both 7.0 and 7.1, check them all out in the shop here!
